UTB’s annual beach cleanup drives awareness for a greener Bahrain

The University of Technology Bahrain (UTB) reaffirmed its strong commitment to community engagement, environmental awareness, and sustainability through the successful conduct of its annual beach cleaning initiative at Karranah Beach, organised by the College of Engineering in collaboration with the Northern Governorate. The event brought together UTB faculty, staff, students, and alumni under the university’s community engagement initiative, UTB CarEs, promoting unity, responsibility, and active participation toward a cleaner environment for all.

Joining the university community were delegates from the Northern Governorate, whose participation reflected the shared dedication between government and academia in protecting Bahrain’s natural environment. Their involvement underscored the importance of partnership in promoting environmental consciousness and civic responsibility within the wider community.

Speaking about the event, His Excellency Mr Hassan bin Abdullah Al Madani, Governor of the Northern Governorate, commended UTB for its active role in environmental protection and youth empowerment. He emphasised the significance of collaboration between educational institutions and local authorities in supporting Bahrain’s national vision for sustainability.

“Initiatives like this demonstrate that real progress begins when education, innovation, and community come together with one purpose – to protect and preserve our beloved Bahrain for future generations.”

Representing UTB’s leadership, Dr Adnan Altamimi, Vice President for Administration and Finance and Head of the Community Engagement Office, expressed his gratitude to the Northern Governorate for its partnership and continued support. He also reaffirmed UTB’s commitment to sustainability through the UTB CarEs initiative, which serves as a platform for promoting civic responsibility and community involvement.

“Through UTB CarEs, we aim to nurture a culture of giving back to the community. This beach cleaning activity is a simple yet powerful expression of how education extends beyond the classroom – it is about applying what we learn to create real social and environmental impact.”

The College of Engineering led the event, highlighting the vital role of engineering education in developing solutions for a sustainable future. Students from the Bachelor of Science in Environmental Engineering programme played an active part in the initiative, applying their technical knowledge to promote environmental sustainability and ecological awareness. Participants collected and properly segregated waste along Karranah Beach while learning about the environmental consequences of pollution and the importance of marine conservation.

Aligned with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly Clean Water and Sanitation (SDG 6), Responsible Consumption and Production (SDG 12), and Life Below Water (SDG 14), the activity strengthened UTB’s mission to integrate sustainability into education, research, and community engagement. The event not only fostered environmental awareness but also built teamwork, leadership, and civic consciousness among the UTB community.

As one of Bahrain’s largest private universities, UTB continues to distinguish itself through a diverse campus community, comprehensive student support, industry-relevant education, accessible tuition, and modern campus facilities. The university fosters an environment that values collaboration, creativity, and real-world learning, empowering students to become globally minded professionals equipped to address the challenges of tomorrow.

Through purposeful initiatives like the annual beach cleaning, the university demonstrates its dedication to sustainability and community engagement. By integrating environmental responsibility into education and action, UTB continues to inspire meaningful change, nurture innovation, and build partnerships that contribute to a more sustainable and resilient future for Bahrain and beyond.
