UTB students win third place at GWECCC Hackathon

The University of Technology Bahrain (UTB) has achieved another significant milestone as its Environmental Engineering students clinched third place at the competitive Sustainability Hackathon, co-organised by INJAZ Bahrain, during the Global Water, Energy and Climate Change Congress (GWECCC 2025). Bringing together over 100 students from leading universities across the GCC, the competition highlighted youth-driven solutions for sustainability, with UTB standing out as the only university in Bahrain to place among the top three.

UTB secured third place, alongside winners from Saudi Arabia and Kuwait. This recognition underscores UTB’s growing reputation for excellence in environmental innovation and its strong contribution to national, regional, and global sustainability efforts.

The winning UTB team was composed of Wed Radhi, Fay Juma, Sakeena Hussain, and Ahmed Isa, students of the Bachelor of Science in Environmental Engineering programme, under the close supervision of Dr Dalal Al Alaiwat, Head of the programme. Their project presented a comprehensive step-by-step roadmap for Bahrain to achieve its net zero carbon emissions target by 2060. The plan detailed specific policies, alternative sources of energy, a thorough cost analysis, challenges and mitigation strategies, and potential sources of funding over the next 35 years. Their innovative and practical approach won praise for being both visionary and actionable in addressing the nation’s climate commitments.

The award was presented to the UTB team by Dr Mohammed bin Mubarak Bin Dainah, Minister of Oil and Environment and Special Envoy for Climate Affairs, in the presence of Dr Diana Abdulkarim Al Jahromi, Secretary General of the Higher Education Council. In addition to the winning team, UTB also had strong participation from students in Mechatronics Engineering and International Business programmes, reflecting the university’s interdisciplinary approach and commitment to providing students with meaningful platforms to apply their knowledge beyond the classroom.

This achievement highlights UTB’s student-centred commitment to providing curricular, co-curricular, and extracurricular opportunities that equip students with future-ready work qualifications. By fostering creativity, innovation, and industry relevance, UTB continues to strengthen its position as a leading higher education institution in Bahrain and a partner in shaping sustainable solutions for the Kingdom, the region, and beyond.
