UTB strengthens support for national environmental and sustainability initiatives

The University of Technology Bahrain (UTB), through its flagship community engagement platform, UTB CarEs, continues to reinforce its commitment to environmental sustainability and experiential learning by advancing its strategic collaboration with the MaRiva Project, a national initiative dedicated to restoring marine biodiversity in the Kingdom of Bahrain.

As part of the ongoing partnership, a lecture and interactive discussion session was held with students from UTB’s Bachelor of Science in Environmental Engineering programme, in line with the Memorandum of Understanding previously signed between UTB and the Rotary Club of Seef Bahrain. The session forms part of a broader framework aimed at integrating academic knowledge with hands-on community and environmental action.

The lecture was delivered by Mr Basel Aryan, Project Lead of MaRiva, who revisited key marine environmental challenges discussed in earlier sessions and engaged students in an open dialogue to exchange ideas, aspirations, and practical approaches to supporting the project’s objectives. It has encouraged students to actively contribute perspectives on how academic research, innovation, and youth-led initiatives can play a vital role in addressing pressing marine environmental issues.

During the session, both parties agreed to organise one joint field-based activity every month, reinforcing UTB’s applied learning model and its strong commitment to community impact. These initiatives will include field visits to Bahrain’s coastlines and islands to collect marine water and soil samples for analysis in UTB’s advanced laboratories, supporting research-driven environmental solutions. The collaboration will also feature structured brainstorming and innovation workshops focused on developing practical and scalable approaches to marine environmental protection, alongside outreach visits to schools that enable UTB students to engage with younger learners, raise environmental awareness, and inspire early participation in sustainability initiatives linked to the MaRiva Project.

This collaboration underscores the importance of bridging academic excellence with community engagement to address urgent environmental challenges. It further strengthens MaRiva’s role as a national initiative focused on marine life restoration in Bahrain, while supporting educational, research, and public participation efforts aligned with national sustainability priorities.

The MaRiva Project, led by the Rotary Club of Seef Bahrain, is a national environmental initiative aimed at restoring marine biodiversity in the Kingdom of Bahrain through education, scientific collaboration, and active community involvement. The project supports Bahrain’s environmental objectives and contributes to the development of a sustainable economy.

Through UTB CarEs, the University of Technology Bahrain continues to empower students to become responsible global citizens, translating classroom learning into real-world impact and reinforcing UTB’s mission as a community-focused, sustainability-driven higher education institution.
