In celebration of the annual Bahrain Sports Day and in line with its community engagement flagship, UTB CarEs, the University of Technology Bahrain (UTB) had a dynamic lineup of sporting activities, reinforcing its commitment to inclusivity, community engagement, and holistic well-being. A key highlight of the celebration was a special tournament in collaboration with the Friendship Society for the Blind, bringing together visually impaired participants, university’s management, faculty, staff, students, alumni, and fitness enthusiasts in a unified spirit of sportsmanship.
Celebrating determination and resilience, Dr Hasan Almulla, President of UTB, emphasised the tournament’s significance, stating that the visually impaired were an integral part of society and a source of inspiration. He described the event as a celebration of their resilience, noting that their perseverance and success should serve as role models in universities. He reaffirmed UTB’s commitment to fostering an inclusive environment that nurtures their talents, adding that their participation in sports was a testament to their strength and determination.
Dr Adnan Altamimi, Vice President for Administration and Finance and Head of the Community Engagement Office, also emphasised the university’s commitment to inclusivity, stating that the tournament reflected UTB’s dedication to ensuring sports for all. He emphasised that the initiative aimed to create an environment where everyone could participate and thrive. He added that the collaboration supported sustainable development efforts, enhancing quality of life through education, health, and the environment while fostering a stronger, more cooperative community.
Reinforcing these views, Mr Hussein Al-Halibi, President of the Friendship Society for the Blind, conveyed his sincere appreciation for UTB’s steadfast support in fostering inclusion through sports, breaking barriers of isolation, and encouraging active participation in society. He also praised UTB’s leadership for its warmth and support, wishing the university continued success in its mission.
Participants also echoed their appreciation for UTB’s encouragement fostering a sense of belonging and inspiring greater inclusivity in sports. They competed in a variety of tournaments, including table tennis, chess, shot put, running and dominoes, creating an atmosphere of enthusiasm and friendly competition. Winners of the friendship matches were honoured with medals.
After the special tournaments, UTB students continued the celebration with football, recreational activities, and indoor games. More than promoting health, the celebration aimed to raise awareness among students and university members, and promote values of camaraderie and mutual respect through physical activity.
The event has reinforced UTB’s advocacy for an active lifestyle through engaging reminders on elevators, stairs, and doors – encouraging everyone to “Take more steps today for a healthier you,” capping off a truly inspiring celebration of sports, unity, and empowerment.
