UTB awarded at Bahrain Smart Cities Summit 2025

In a significant demonstration of its dedication to innovation and sustainability, the University of Technology Bahrain (UTB) has been awarded the best accolade in the Renewable Energy and Sustainability Initiatives category at the eighth edition of Bahrain Smart Cities Summit, held earlier this month. The award was presented by His Excellency Shaikh Khalid bin Abdullah Al Khalifa, Deputy Prime Minister of Bahrain.

This recognition highlights UTB’s innovative project, “Harnessing Solar Energy for Sustainable Universities in Smart Cities,” which advances energy efficiency and promotes environmental sustainability within smart cities. The project integrates solar technologies to reduce energy consumption and contribute to sustainable urban development.

Dr Hasan Almulla, President of UTB, expressed his gratitude to His Excellency Shaikh Khalid bin Abdullah Al Khalifa for honouring the university. He stated, “This recognition underscores our ongoing commitment to scientific research and sustainable innovation. It also reflects our alignment with Bahrain’s Economic Vision 2030, as we continue to invest in clean energy technologies that empower our students to meet future challenges.”

The project, led by Professor Husham Ahmed, Director of the Research Council, aims to generate electrical energy through solar panels to meet part of the university’s energy needs. In addition, UTB students conducted research on optimising solar panel efficiency by addressing the impact of dust accumulation and improving panel installation angles. The project also explored the use of robotic systems for automated solar panel cleaning, enhancing efficiency while reducing maintenance costs.

This achievement further solidifies UTB’s role in advancing smart city solutions and renewable energy adoption, contributing to Bahrain’s environmental and economic sustainability.

Through its continued innovation and strategic initiatives, UTB remains committed to fostering a sustainable future for generations to come.
